Under One Roof

About

In 2020, St. Mark’s Church secured funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund for a large-scale restoration and community engagement programme, with the goal of removing the church from Historic England’s At Risk Register.

The first stage was a two-year development phase, which enabled the Under One Roof project to carry out essential surveys and building assessments, refine restoration costs, and trial community activities to understand local interests. All of this shaped a successful Delivery Phase funding application.

In January 2023, a two-and-a-half-year programme of capital restoration works and community engagement activities began at St. Mark’s.

Under One Roof was never just about restoring a building. It was about reconnecting people with heritage, creativity, and each other.

A wide range of workshops, events, and exhibitions invited people to learn about the restoration, uncover the church’s history, and explore its role in the community. These sessions brought together neighbours, newcomers, and long-time residents to make, share, and celebrate. From pottery and textiles to photography and storytelling, over 2,400 people have helped shape the future of St. Mark’s.

This is just a glimpse of a bigger story.  One of belonging, creativity, and a collective effort to bring a historic building and civic space back to life.
